Lamar Holiday Invitational Baca County Teams
This weekend was a busy one for sports as both the Springfield Longhorns and the Walsh Eagles were competing in the Holiday Invitational.
The Springfield Lady Longhorns had the best outcome of the weekend placing 2nd. The Lady Longhorns first game was against the Walsh Lady Eagles. Springfield was the better team from the very start outscoring them by 20 in 3 out of 4 quarters. The final score of the game was 60-9. Sophomore Lainee Leathers led the team in scoring with 15 points, Senior Alayah Meltabarger added 14 points in the win.
The second game for the Springfield Lady Longhorns was much of the same as the Lady Longhorns won by a total of 21 points against the Granada Lady Bobcats. The Lady Longhorns imposed their will on the Lady Bobcats with several forced turnovers and missed shots. The first quarter was much an indicator for how the rest of the game would go, the Lady Horns outscored the Bobcats 27-6 after just one quarter. The Lady Longhorns would go on to win the game by 21 points. The final score of the game was 62-41 with junior Brakelle Westphal leading the team in scoring with 20 points.
In the Championship game the Lady Longhorns faced the McClave Lady Cardinals. After winning both of the previous games by at least 20, this game was very different. Springfield found themselves playing from behind the whole game. After one quarter the score was 4-11 in favor of the Cardinals. The Cardinals were playing a physical game and the Longhorns seemed unsure of how to handle it. This led to several turnovers and missed shots. Halfway through the 4th it was clear the game was out of reach and the reserves were put into the game to play the rest of the game. The final score of the Championship game was 29-54 in favor of the McClave Lady Cardinals.
The Springfield Longhorns boys basketball team had a rough start to the tournament, but were able to pick up the pace and win the consolation side of the bracket. The first game of the tournament for the Springfield Longhorns had them facing the Holly Wildcats. The Springfield Longhorns were not able to keep up with the shot making of the Wildcats. This resulted in a loss, with the score being 44-62.
The second game for the Springfield Longhorns had them facing the Kit Carson Wildcats. The Longhorns were able to control the game winning 3 out of the 4 periods of the game. Consistent shot making and defense was a main theme for the Longhorns in the contest with Kyler Crane being the leading scorer for the Longhorns with 14 points. The final score of the game was 44-39 in favor of the Longhorns.
After winning their first game of the season the Longhorns looked to continue their streak against the Eads Eagles in their third game of the weekend. This is exactly what they were able to do. After a strong 1st quarter the Longhorns led the Eagles 15-8. Going into halftime the score was much closer than the first 25-24 with the Longhorns in the lead. After halftime the Longhorns were able to outscore the Eagles 15-7. Which gave them a comfortable lead for the rest of the game. The final score of the game was 49-41 in favor of the Longhorns and crowning them the consolation champions.
The Walsh Eagles had a rough go around in the Lamar Holiday Invitational. The Walsh Lady Eagles faced off against the Springfield Lady Longhorns in their first game of the tournament. (see above for short recap of the game)
The second game of the tournament for the Lady Eagles was Wiley Lady Panthers this game was not much different from the first. The Lady Eagles struggled to score and keep control of the ball. This was caused by some tenacious defense from the Lady Panthers. They were only able to score three points in the contest. All 3 points were accounted for by Sophomore Keely Smith.
The third and final game for the Walsh Lady Eagles was against the Eads Lady Eagles. The Walsh Eagles were able to score more than in their previous game, scoring 7 points. The final score of the game was 7-48 in favor of the Eads Lady Eagles.
The Walsh Eagles boys basketball team had a similar outcome to the tournament as their counterparts in the girls teams. The first game of the tournament for the Eagles was against the first quarter is all that was needed to understand the outcome of this game the Eagles lost the period 37-6. Which resulted in the end score being 62-18 in favor of the Granada Bobcats.
In Walsh’s second game of the tournament they faced the Eads Eagles. This game was very similar to their first matchup against the Granada Bobcats. The Eagles held Eads to only 8 points in the first quarter but were only able to score 3 themselves. After two quarters Walsh Eagles were losing by 28 points and the game was ultimately over. The final score for the contest was 11-56 in favor of the Eads Eagles.
After a long weekend for the Walsh Eagles, their final contest was against the Kit Carson Wildcats the Eagles struggled with the shot making of the Wildcats. The Eagles would go on to lose the game 14-48
