Local Governments Join Rep. Lauren Boebert in Opposition to Current NIETC Corridor Plan in SE Colorado
WASHINGTON D.C.– Congresswoman Lauren Boebert (CO-04) applauded recent resolutions passed from local governments in Southeast Colorado opposing the current plan for the Southwestern Grid Connector Corridor that will run through the region as part of the Biden Administration’s National Interest Electric Transmission Corridor (NIETC) plan. The resolutions from Prowers County, Baca County, Crowley County, Bent County, and the Town of Holly, criticized the lack of involvement of local governments in the process and expressed grave concerns about the federal government’s potential to use eminent domain to seize hundreds of thousands of acres in their counties and towns.Congresswoman Boebert spoke at a meeting of the Prowers County Commissioners this week to offer her support and continue to fight for their community on this topic. She encourages all 4th District constituents to submit public comment before tonight’s midnight deadline and express their opposition to this federal land grab. Public comment can be submitted HERE. “Local counties and towns across Southeast Colorado have made it clear: this NIETC process has been broken from the start and has left them with serious concerns about the federal government taking over their land,” said Congresswoman Boebert. “I spoke directly to Energy Secretary Chris Wright on this topic and shared with him the frustrations 4th District leaders, ranchers, farmers, and landowners feel about this federal land grab. Our staff is in communication with the Department of Energy and I am confident we will get to a positive resolution in the coming weeks. For now, I encourage everyone to leave more public comments in opposition to this federal takeover of Southeast Colorado.”The Prowers County Resolution can be read HERE.The Baca County Resolution can be read HERE.The Crowley County Resolution can be read HERE.The Bent County Resolution can be read HERE.The Town of Holly Resolution can be read HERE.Background:The National Interest Electric Transmission Corridor (NIETC) was part of the Biden Administration’s top-down approach to pushing federal control of energy infrastructure without balancing the rights of private property owners or understanding how these plans would hurt rural Americans. The Southwestern Grid Connector Corridor runs through Southeast Colorado, New Mexico, and the Oklahoma Panhandle and is one of only three remaining corridors as part of NIETC currently scheduled to move forward. Coloradans who have concerns with the NIETC and the process can make public comment HERE until midnight of Friday, February 14th. In an interview with The Fence Post which can be read HERE, Rep. Boebert laid out more concerns with the lack of transparency over the process. Read a letter sent from Congresswoman Boebert to Secretary Wright in opposition to the NIETC corridor HERE. |
