Ruby Lois Nicodemus Brite went to be with her beloved Paul on September 23, 2021. She was almost 98 years old – she was born September 26, 1923 – the oldest daughter of Abie Olen and Ruby Ann Davis Nicodemus. She had an older brother, Vernon, and a younger sister, Fern. Her mom died of cancer when she was 13 years old and she took over the household chores with the help of her Dad and siblings. She met Paul Brite one day in the pasture. She was milking a cow and he rode up on a horse. They were married at Richfield, Kansas on May 21, 1940 and had 60 years together.
On August 15, 1941, their first child was born in Boise City, Oklahoma, Lois Paulene. Paul was working at Perkins Protho Ranch as a cowboy and Lois cooked for the cowboys. Their second child, Perry Olen was born in St. Helens, Oregon on October 16, 1942. Paul worked in a ship yard for a couple of years and then they came back to Baca County. Lois was a hard-working farm/ranch wife. She milked cows, separated and sold cream, cooked for broomcorn hands, shocked feed, raised chickens for eggs and to eat, ran the tractor, drove the grain truck, caked cattle, cooked for the branding crew and raised a garden. Where ever she was needed, she was there to do the job. Perry married Susie Grover and they had one daughter, Shelly. Perry was killed in a car accident in 1965 and eventually Shelly came to live with Paul and Lois and they raised her as their own. Paulene married Pat Crill and they had 2 sons, Joe and Jim. Shelly married and had two daughters, Kayci ad Kodie. After Paul’s death in 2000, at the age of 80, Lois continued to live on their farm/ranch by herself. Her nephew Tom Alton and his son Cade checked on her as well as her neighbors, Dan and Linda Caldwell. If she needed help, they were there and helped time and again in many, many ways. She could always depend on them as well as the rest of the neighbors – good place to live.
